Picea pungens
The beautiful, blue needles of this species gave this variety part of its name. The Colorado connection comes from the native habitat of the tree -- the Southwest U.S. It is well adapted to many environments; very drought tolerant and hardy too. Needles are very sharp and the crown is very dense and conical in the younger trees - prymidal when older. A very popular tree for the Christmas season.

Picea glauca
Found throughout Canada and northeastern U.S., this medium-sized conifer has a beautiful cone-shaped crown. Long, spreading branches and excellent foliage color give it an elegant appearance. As a Christmas tree, the short stiff needles stay on the branch and the bluish-green color make it a popular choice for the holidays. The White Spruce is tolerant of a considerable amount of shade and is best grown in moist, acidic soil.

Picea abies
Nicknamed "the red fir," this variety is often confused with a Fir tree. The Norway Spruce has flat needles and cones that stand erect on the stem in comparison to the Fir. This spruce is adapted to cool climates and grows best in full sunlight in deep, rich soil. As a Christmas tree, its needle retention is considered less than optimal unless it is cut fresh and kept properly watered.

Picea omorika
Native to a small part of Yugoslavia, this is a unique tree to the spruce family. The needles are flattened, rather than four sided as in most spruces. They also have two white bands on the underside of the needle. The bark is a reddish-brown color, which is not uncommon in spruces, but is especially striking in this variety. The Serbian Spruce has a graceful, slender form and makes a fine tree inside or outdoors.
