Pinus sylvestris
Probably one of the most commonly used species of Christmas trees, the Scotch Pine is extremely hardy and adaptable to a wide variety of soils. With excellent needle retention and good keepability, it is a popular choice for the holidays. A native tree to Europe and Asia, the Scotch Pine is also known for its dark green foliage and stiff branches, as well as its excellent harvesting and shipping qualities. Needles range from one inch to three inches long and are variable in color, with shades of bright green to bluish hues. This species is not demanding with respect to fertility or moisture.

Pinus nigra
This particular species of pine succeeds on a variety of environments and soils. It is a hearty breed and transplants well. With long, dark-green needles (reaching 4 to 6 inches in length) and a broad crown, the Austrian Pine is planted for both shelter and ornament. The bark matures into large, grey rectangular ridges as the tree develops.

Pinus strobus
The state tree of Michigan, the White Pine boasts long, four inch blue-green to medium-green needles that come in bundles of five. It is known for its rapid growth rate and can tolerate a variety of shade and soil climates. Native to eastern North America, the White Pine is well-acclimated for both holiday and reforestation purposes.

Pinus resinosa
Also known as the Norway Pine, this tree is one of the most extensively planted in North America. Indigneous to the Upper Great Lakes region, the Red Pine prefers sandy soil but can tolerate a wide array of soil and shade types. Unlike its White relative, the Red Pine displays its long four inch needles in bundles of two. Its hardiness makes it especially suited for timber and reforestation projects.
