Abies fraseri

The "Cadillac" of Christmas trees, the Fraser Fir is a desireable uniformly pyramid-shaped specimen. The combination of this form, great needle retention, pleasant scent and lush dark blue-green color make it a prevailing choice for tree buyers. It grows naturally in higher elevations throughout southwest Virginia, western North Carolina, and eastern Tennessee and is found in fertile, rocky to sandy soils that tend toward acidic.

Balsam Fir

Abies balsamea

The Balsam Fir shares many characteristics with the Fraser Fir, although it is found in a much a larger geographical region than the Fraser. In fact, the Balsam has the largest geographical distribution than any other North American fir species. As a Christmas tree, it has many desirable properties: plush dark green appearance, long-lasting needles, a pleasant fragrance, and an attractive, compact shape. The species thrives in cooler climates with abundant soil moisture and a humid atmosphere.

Canaan Fir

Abies balsamea var. phanerolephis

This species is often confused for a Balsam Fir or Fraser Fir. And with good reason, since it is very close relative to them and shares many similarities in growth and appearance. These shared qualities are a pleasant smell, plush dark blue-green color and long-lasting needles.

Concolor Fir San Juan, Cibola

Abies concolor

The Concolor Fir, also called White Fir, is native to the western U.S. and produces a spire-like crown with a straight trunk. Needles are small and narrow and occur in rows, producing a pleasing natural shape as a whole. The lighter color of the Concolor Fir is often used in landscaping as a contrast to darker-colored evergreens. It makes an excellent ornamental tree which, along with the refreshing aroma and good needle retention, make it a natural choice for Christmas time. The Concolor Fir can be found in a wide range from the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Coast in moist, loamy soil.

Douglas Fir Lincoln and Shuswap Lake

Pseudotsuga menziesii

Adaptation to a variety of soils has given this species a very wide growing range. It has been the major Christmas tree species used in the Pacific Northwest since the 1920's, and is currently shipped to the majority of states including exportation to the Hawaiian Islands and Guam. Needles on the Douglas Fir are dark green or blue green and radiate out in all directions from the branch. Nationally, it remains one of the most popular species of Christmas trees.
